As you are all aware, there are many steps being taken within the State to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. All of us in our jobs and lives are being impacted in one way or another. First, I want to remind you all that while we sometimes feel like office operations cannot go on without our help, I encourage you to stay home if you are sick, and do your part to help keep our first responders healthy. We will likely all see the impact on work families in the weeks/months to come.
You may have heard over the weekend that the Centers for Disease Control has recommended that events with 50 or more people be postponed or canceled for the next 8 weeks. Today, Governor Brown also added more social-distancing requirements for Oregonians. For the next four weeks, all events with 25 or more people are recommended to be postponed or canceled. President Trump has also urged Americans to adhere to social distancing (gathering in groups of more than 10) for the next 15 days.
In light of this news, I feel obligated to cancel the Spring OFSOA Conference. Oregon is very early in our COVID-19 response, and numbers of infected Oregonians are expected to increase dramatically as more tests become available, and numbers are updated. As it sits today, our conference is just outside the CDC's 8-week social gathering guidance. In order to keep you safe, and help prevent the spread of the virus, I think canceling the event is the best practice to accomplish this.
Our Treasurer, Jamie Vohs, will be working to refund all registration fees back to your departments. Please be patient as we work through this process. Please remember if you have already made hotel reservations to contact them and cancel your room as soon as possible. I want to thank the Event Planning Committee for their hard work and patience as they continued planning while waiting to hear how this would all play out. We hope to move some of the great classes we had planned in the Spring to the Fall event. Registration for the Fall event will not be limited, so that is a bonus!
Thank you for your understanding and please reach out to me, our Vice President Ashley Naught, or Diane Nave our Event Planning Chair with any questions.
